How to Choose an ASMR Mic

A lot of people think that the microphone is responsible for making the recording sound “bad” or “ungood”, but it doesn’t have to be.

The problem with most microphones is that they are too “sharp” and produce feedback noise.

The trick with recording video is to make sure that the microphone is not picking up on random sounds be it outside or within the room (for example, your breathing).

1. Using a Pop-Filter

There are a couple of ways to do this. One way is to use a pop filter. A pop filter will take care of sibilance and plosives which are often found in speech recordings.

Sibilance is the predominant hissing noise that is caused by the air that passes through the mouth as it says the letters “s” and “shh” and plosives are explosive sounds made by expelling air from within the mouth, such as in words like “p”, or “b”.

Another way to reduce noise is by using a windshield. This is like a pop filter but it’s for recording voices. When recording with a windshield, you will have quieter background noise. A windshield also helps prevent acoustic feedback when the microphone touches the mouth or lips of the person saying something.

2. Mic Placement

microphones for ASMR

After you choose your microphone, you have to position it in order to get the most out of it. If you record in your bedroom, for example, the microphone should be placed at least 15 cm above the mouth of the speaker. It’s common knowledge that being too close to someone can cause problems, so it’s better to keep a safe distance.

This is also true if you are planning to get closer to your subject during your recording session. It’s better to position the microphone above the speaker’s mouth and get closer to them so that you can record their voice properly.

3. Recording Environment

The recording space can also have a huge effect on your recordings. If your recordings happen to be in a busy street or airport, then expect some noises coming in from outside or being picked up by your microphone. You don’t want background noise getting on your good audio tracks.

Although this won’t do much harm to your video, it can seriously affect the listener’s experience if they cannot pinpoint the exact location (and sounds) from where your recording comes from.

You need to make sure that you aren’t too close to the microphone when recording. People often get too eager and want to get right up in it and talk into it.

4. Background Noise

Another factor to consider is that you need to be conscious about other people in the recording space with you. Not only do they not want to disturb your recording session, they also don’t have any intention of listening and may even have trouble concentrating on the task at hand. That being said, they could be curious about what you are doing and want to listen in on your ASMR video.

This can cause a lot of noise for your recording, so you must be prepared for it. If you want to record an ASMR video in person, you can use the headphones and mic combination or two separate microphones to make it easier for everyone to enjoy their time and get what they want.

5. External Recorders

If you want your ASMR video to have a great quality sound – use an external recorder.

A lot of ASMR fans like to get the best results possible when producing their videos. They want to make a great recording with a pleasant sound and great quality.

If you are recording ASMR videos in your bedroom, for example, it’s best to use a high-quality external microphone and external recording software.
